1939
“Local Briefs”
Mrs. Ruth Wilson returned to Townsend last week after having enjoyed a plane trip to Seattle to visit her daughter. She reported good flying weather and a very pleasant vacation.
Postmaster Frank Murray is much improved following a sudden attack of illness last Thursday morning when he was taken to the Broadwater hospital. Mrs. Murray is assisting in the post office with clerk Ralph Mankamyer and both Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Sperry have been giving the force a lift with the increasing Christmas mails. Mr. Sperry was former Townsend postmaster.
“School Census Shows Increase of 171 Pupils”
The school census of Broadwater county for the year 1939-40, according to the report compiled by county superintendent of schools, Edith B. Fox, shows an increase of 171 pupils over last hear. This years’ figures show that 420 boys and 452 girls between the ages of 6 to 21 are registered, making a total of 872.
Last year there were 366 boys registered and 401 girls, totaling 767. The final analysis shows that there are 105 more children between the ages of 6 and 21.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gaab and little Carol of Livingston are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Gaab at Canton.
Mr. and Mrs. John Moran of Laurel, Mont. were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Whaley. Mr. Niche Moran of Townsend, uncle of Phillip, joined the family for Sunday dinner.
Miss Blanche Riley returned to Seattle last Sunday after several months visit at the home ranch.
Mrs. Ingeborg Merrit and son, Lonnie, left for a three week’s visit in Arizona Monday evening.
“Townsend News”
Mr. and Mrs. Howard J. Doggett returned from Casper, Wyoming last Saturday evening where they had been attending a National Woolgrowers Association meeting.
Mr. George Lots and daughter, Marcia, spent a couple of days the first of the week in Great Falls visiting Mr. Lots parents.
Miss Peggy Graveley was home from Dillon for the Senior Hop last Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hopkins were out from Helena for a visit in the home of their daughter, Mrs. J. Garrison Rains and family Sunday.
Robert McCarthy has enrolled in college in San Francisco to take a course in insurance. He was accompanied as far as Saalt Lake City by Don Rees the first of the week.
1961
“Do You Want Santa to Visit Your Home”
The American Legion and Auxiliary have made arrangements for Santa Claus to visit Townsend Saturday, December 23. He will visit the hospital, rest home, and folks in their own homes. Anyone wishing to have the jolly old fellow call at their home on the evening of the 23rd, just call 5 or 92 and he’ll be around. This is a free service arranged by the above organizations.
“Free Show for All County Children Next Week at Rex”
The Sautters are presenting their annual free shows for all youngsters of the county next week, Thursday, December 21 for preschool at 10:00 a.m. and high school students at 1:00 p.m.
Friday, December 22 grades 1 – 4 and rural schools at 10:00 a.m. and grades 5 – 8 and rural schools at 1:00 p.m.
The American Legion and Auxiliary have arranged for Santa Claus to pass out treats after each show.
1967
“Local News”
Mrs. Jewel Dance left Friday for Sacramento Calif., where she will visit her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Boeh and family. Later she will go on to Apple Valley to visit another daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Anders. Mrs. Dance expects to spend a good share of the winter in California.
Mr. and Mrs. Marcel Turcotte of Barstow, Calif., will arrive Sunday to spend the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Carson.
Lt. jg Gary Cruson arrived home Sunday evening to enjoy the holidays with his family, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Horne and Gene. Gary is now in San Diego.
Kerrie Sullivan was nine years old Saturday, Dec. .9 and to celebrate the occasion, her mother, Mrs. Larry Sullivan invited several of her friends in for a party. The afternoon was spent playing games and Kerrie opened many lovely gifts. Attending were Tammy and Kim Bucy, Niki and Peggy Gilmore, Susan Swenson, Lori and Lita Clark, Kris and Kelly Sullivan.
1978
“Penny-A-Point Fund Nets $175.56”
The proceeds of the “Penny A Point” fund for the girl’s’ basketball team ($175.56) was turned over to Coach Grimsrud December 6.
There were 26 participants including Jack McCoy, Doris McCoy, Terry Plummer, Sandy Copeland, Dianna Sitton, George Gabisch, Dee Schmaus, Dick Schmaus, Jim Holland, Nancy Holland, Lena Leanhart, Marion Iverson, Bob Montayne, Cindy Coonis, R.W. Lundborg, Al Copeland, Edna Sanders, Horseshoe Cafe, Trish Anderson, Ida Armstrong, Jim Armstrong, Brenda Copeland, Esther Tichenor, Donna Sitton, Gene Wickre.
Head of the program, Mayor Cap Gorman, expressed his thanks to all those who participated and especially conveyed the thanks of the team and coach.
Although the use of the funds did not have a special designation, it was noted that it would be put to good use.
The total amount donated, does not correspond to the number entered, as several put in a little extra.
