Veterans Day Celebrated At Townsend Schools

Last week, Townsend Public Schools informed their students about a federal holiday that is highly regarded by people around the country and in Broadwater County.
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day is marked on November 11th. This marked the ending of World War 1 at 11 o’clock on the 11th day of the 11th month when the Armistice was signed to end the war. In 1919, it was formally declared as Armistice Day.
Nearly thirty-four years later, when Dwight D. Eisenhower served as president of the United States, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day. Eisenhower wanted to ensure that all of those who are currently serving or have served in the military are honored. This includes members of the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, and most recently, the Space Force.
Wednesday, November 8th, the American Legion and Townsend Public Schools came together to inform students of the importance of this federal holiday. Students in K-12 learned the history of Veterans Day, the arranging and addition to the flags, and heard from a sergeant about what is currently going on in Montana and taught them some marching drills.
The American Legion informed students about the addition to the flag arrangements. This flag honors all of those who have been declared missing in action and for those who were prisoners of war. This flag holds a significant amount of meaning to the American people and we will regard it as such.
Sergeant Michael A. Fisette currently works at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Helena. He has served in the army for twelve years and is still working hard to serve our country. He works to maintain all of the helicopters in the state. The main helicopters they work with are the UH-60 Blackhawk and the CH-47 Chinook. Personally, Sergeant Fisette “crewed and flew on the LUH-72 before he became a desk jockey” he stated. On this helicopter, there is a camera at the front that can read a license plate from over 2 miles away, at around 7-8,000 feet in the sky. It can also fly up to 167 miles per hour. These were only a few facts that were shared with the school.
We have many people in Broadwater County who faithfully served our country and a few who are currently on active duty. TJ Lynde, Eric Kruger, and Larry Westfall are a few familiar faces who have served in the armed forces and deserve our undying thankfulness. John Bleile and siblings Scout and Will Lynde are a few local community members who are currently serving on active duty.
These people and their families have laid down the comfort of their own homes and families to protect our country from any potential threat to the sovereignty of our great nation. Whenever you see a veteran, greet them with a firm and meaningful handshake and thank them for their service. They gave away their comfort so you could have yours.
