Townsend Trees Planted for Special Purposes

This is the thirteenth of a series of articles about trees planted in Townsend and Broadwater County to honor people, special events, or for other purposes. The Tree Board hopes people will come forward with more information on other trees planted on public as well as private property so the tree and its purpose can be documented.

58) Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’, Canada Red Chokecherry; planted in Veteran’s Park.

• This tree was planted on May 29, 2008, to recognize William Henry West IV, born June 18, 1980. MT Army National Guard Staff Sergeant 1st Battalion 163rd Infantry in Honor of Service to Our Country. Planted by the Family and Tree Board. Donated by Matt and Jeanne West. The tree is the third tree from the south end of the park on the west side. The tree is in good condition.

59) Crataegus crus-galli var. inermis Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn; planted at the Broadwater County Courthouse.

• This tree was planted in May 2007 to honor the “Tree Hugger” Judy Gillespie, for 15 years of service to Broadwater County as Clerk and Recorder, Treasurer, Election Administrator, Clerk to the Commissioners, Clerk of Court, etc. Planted by the family and the Tree Board. The tree was donated by Broadwater County. The tree is located west of the southwest entrance to the Courthouse. The tree is in good condition.

60) Quercus macrocarpa Bur Oak; planted on Courthouse property.

• This tree was planted in May 2006 in memory of Leo Kleffner, Tree Board member. Planted by the Broadwater County High School Students and the Tree Board. The tree was paid for by the Tree Board. The tree is located on the southwest end of the Courthouse property and is the furthest east and third tree in a row of oaks. The tree has bullet-galls caused by the rough bullet-gall wasp. The tree is in good condition.

61) Juniperus scopulorum ‘Sky Rocket’, Sky Rocket Juniper; planted in 2023 in memory of Eleanor H. Marks.

• A Juniperus scopulorum ‘Wichita Blue’, Wichita Blue Juniper was planted in the spring of 1994 in memory of Eleanor H. Marks, Charter member of the Broadwater Historical Society. She was instrumental in building the Broadwater County Museum and writing the Broadwater Bygones. The tree was donated by Nancy Marks. The tree was planted south of the museum doors and began to conflict with the sidewalk and was removed and a new one was replanted in 2009 by the Tree Board. In 2022, the tree conflicted with the sidewalk again and was removed. A Sky Rocket Juniper was planted on the southeast corner of the museum property in the summer of 2023 in an area where three other junipers died in the winter of 2022-2023. This Sky Rocket Juniper was planted to replace the original tree planted for Eleanor Marks that was removed. The Sky Rocket Juniper was paid for by the Tree Board. The tree is in good condition.

62) Malus species ‘Spring Snow’, Spring Snow Crabapple; planted at the Broadwater Courthouse.

• This tree was planted in May 2005 honoring Bob Bagley. The tree was planted by Bob and the Tree Board. The tree was paid for by Bob Bagley. The tree is planted west of the main entrance sidewalk. The tree is in good condition and is sprayed for fireblight annually by the Tree Board.
