Town Pump Will Match Food Bank Donations During November
MT 43 News Staff Reporter
Food bank donors who give to the Broadwater Food Pantry during the month of November will have their donations matched by Town Pump of Butte. The match ends November 30, according to Food Pantry officer Steve Visocan.
Donations are especially welcome since Food Pantry use has doubled in the past 6 months. The pantry has gone from serving 14 families per visit to 28 families per visit, according to manager Karoline Nelson. October 21 saw the pantry’s volunteers serve 31 families totaling 71 persons. The service is open for food distribution every 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays at 315 Broadway from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Visocan praised Town Pump for its generous matching program. “The committee cannot say enough about how Town Pump’s support has helped us buy new equipment and maintain our building,” he said.
The group has also had a large anonymous donation from a person in Missoula for baby food and personal sanitary supplies. Families with children especially need these items.
As the holidays approach, Food Bank members gear up to give away free turkeys and hams with all the trimmings for families who sign up. “Anyone can sign up for free dinners. We do not require financial information or limit how many folks can use the food bank and no personal information leaves the pantry,” he pointed out.
Townsend Food Bank is not connected to the federal Food Bank Network so it operates independently. It is run completely by volunteers including board members Daryl Blumhagen, president; Steve Visocan, treasurer and Anne Inghram, secretary. The group meets the first Thursday of every month at the Food Pantry office.
Broadwater County church members volunteer to help hand out food items. Mountain Valley Church is staffing the Saturday openings for the month of November.
The nonprofit organization welcomes fresh produce donations. Professionally processed wild meat and ranch meat donations are especially needed.
Food donors are encouraged to bring donations between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. each Friday.
