21 Guaranteed Ways to Get Detention

The Speech and Drama coach, Mrs. Bakkum, has put on the school plays for years. In the fall, there is a humorous play, and in the spring, there is a spring musical. This year, the BHS play was 21 Guaranteed Ways to Get Detention by Ian McWethy. The high school students excitedly offered their talent and produced a masterpiece that had the community continuously laughing.

These talented students include Trista Moos (Principal Kind), Dania Peltier and Hannah Hall (Assistant Principal 1 and 2), Cooper Hines (Gronk, Randy, Bucky, Damien), Jasmine Thomas (Cindy, Chauncey, Eve), Aubrey Wells (Jimmy, Kyle), Noah Borror (Felix, Mac), Jazlyn Martin (Harmony, Ellen), Ana Marie Rose Reinke (Graham, Francis), Shalyn Sentinella (Roz, Carson), Nykia Mondragon (Molly, Jenny), Riley Rauser (Milton), Angel Sentinella (Jack), and Havyn Vandenacre (Allison, Irene). Caleb Lelacheur and Boe Smith graciously worked the lights and music.

The play begins when Principal Kind hires two assistant principals and sets a limit of twenty detentions per year. It seems easy, but after discovering that the students have terrible attitudes, they find it difficult to refrain from giving detentions. From a prideful and malicious cheerleader to a science fair cheater and fanatic, laughter is inevitable.

Jasmine Thomas had a dramatic monologue emphasizing her love for the science fair and her claim of not bribing the judges into giving her a high score. Later in the monologue she admits to having cheated and breaks down in sobs on the floor and then proudly admits that she will never change her ways. In asking about her preparation for the play Jasmine said that “the preparation for the play was quite fun until the week before. Then it starts to set in and there is scrambling to make sure everything goes right.”

Everybody who participated in the play performed fantastically and it may now be a fan favorite out of all of Townsend’s plays. Most of these students compete in Speech and Drama and the fall play is a great opportunity to practice the acting skills learned. Keep track of the Speech and Drama team and be on the lookout for the Spring musical coming up this next year. BHS students are highly competitive and work hard to attain their goals. Thank you for the support!
