County Commissioners Hear Update on State Property Tax Litigation

During public comment at the October 4 meeting, Broadwater County Commissioners listened to an update from County Attorney Cory Swanson regarding a pending lawsuit about county property taxes. Please see the separate story.

Public Works Update

Public Works Supervisor TJ Graveley reported he is partnering with the Sheriff’s Department to purchase a traffic trailer to park on South Broadwater County roads. The solar-powered trailer will be used to collect vehicle speed data and will work as a possible deterrent for speeding vehicles. Both departments will share the $9,300 cost. “The Sheriff’s office and my department get reports of people doing 60,70 miles an hour on those roads. We’re trying to prevent accidents. If residents want to use it on their section of road, please contact us,” he said.

Commission members voted to approve purchasing the traffic trailer.

The walk-in gate at the Winston Container site is closed. Beginning October 10 the area will be open two more days weekly -Tuesday and Thursday from 2 pm to 6 pm. The weekend days remain the same- 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

He reported his department had finished the season’s work. Mowing, blading and installing culverts in South Broadwater is finished. All asphalt patching is completed. The road renovation on Quarter Circle Road should be finished at the end of October.

Copper City Road in South Broadwater is now closed while the contractor does 56 days of rebuilding the road. He has received no update from the US Bureau of Reclamation regarding work on Goose Bay Road.

The commissioners approved an amended contract for newspaper legal advertising. Deputy County Attorney Jania Hatfield presented contract information for newspaper legal advertising charges for the county. Any newspaper published in Broadwater County may bid for the advertising beginning October 19. Bids must be submitted to the Clerk and Recorder’s office no later than Nov. 7.

Weed and Mosquito Coordinator Report

County Weed Coordinator Jessica Bushnell presented an update on her department’s end-of-season weed spraying with 4,300 acres sprayed in the Elk Horn mountains and all the county roads sprayed. She is working on a Noxious Weed Trust fund grant application. It would be intended for the Big Belt mountains.

West Nile virus has sprung up in the county Bushnell said. One horse has been diagnosed, but no other reported. Her department has a Polaris 4-wheeler and a 1998 Chevy pickup for sale.
