Canton Church hosts Middle School History Outing
On October 17 Canton Church Restoration, Inc. hosted the Townsend Middle School students at the Canton Church. The outing is a history field trip, arranged by teacher David Lawson. The students come to the historic building and learn not only about the Church but also learn about Broadwater County history.
Fifty-six middle school students studying Montana History attended the event. The students arrived at the Canton Church around 10:30 am accompanied by Mr. Lawson and fellow teacher Tyler Patrick.
After getting settled into the Church, the students were given a brief history of the Canton Church with a short question and answer period. Then Vic Sample gave the students a presentation about Broadwater County that covered the towns of Diamond City, Radersburg, Canton, Hassel, Hog’Em-Beat’Em-Cheat’Em, Bedford, Toston, Lombard and, of course, Townsend.
After the history presentation, there was a rousing cheer when the students were told lunch was ready! Lunch was provided by the Canton Church group and cooked by Bob and Barb Tootell. Everyone enjoyed the grilled hamburger and hotdogs. When lunch was over, the students had a chance to enjoy the park around the Canton Church before visiting St. Joseph’s cemetery behind the Canton Church. The Cemetery is always the student’s favorite part of the event.
Before leaving the Canton Church the students posed for pictures in front of the Canton Church, then left to visit the Centerville Cemetery adjacent to the R-Y Timber property.
Keith and Robin Kirscher, Pam Sample, Bob and Barb Tootell all helped with the event and Jeremy Price drove the school bus.
