Treasure Island Play Draws a Crowd

Ho, ho and a bottle of rum was the theme for pirates and scullery maids on ships and inns as they made Treasure Island the play come alive on the stage at the Lodge Saturday, August 19. Twelve elementary school-aged students belted out songs and gave convincing portraits in the Robert Lewis Stevenson play.
The young Jim Hawkins (played by Urijah Duede) is working in his mother’s Inn when in comes the seasoned pirate Billy Bones (Zach Matthews). Jim learns Bones has a map to a buried treasure on a distant island. Suddenly Bones dies, but not before giving the map to Jim. With the help of Captain Flynt and his ship, the Hispaniola and the Littaloo Chief (Harper Hazlett), Jim and his crew set out to find the treasure. The twists and turns of the play lead to mutiny on the ship but finally, they find the treasure and all ends well.
The crowd clapped enthusiastically for each student who not only learned his or her lines but also sang short solos for each number. Co-Directors Carla Amundson and LaRinda Spencer did a masterful job pulling the students together into a great play.
Broadwater Community Theater board members produce a children’s play every summer. Others who paint backdrops, provide props and generally help put together the performance were Macy Bauman, Vivian Boaz, Laura and Hannah Frazier, Townsend Flooring, the Bird’s Nest, Anne Hall and Sean Duede. Dallas and Jaxon Fligge ran the lights.
Volunteers who enjoy theater and would like to help with the next performance should contact Board President LaRinda Spencer at larindas@yahoo.com.
