Advice to incoming freshman

School starts in about two weeks on Wednesday the 23rd. For many students, it is a time to reconnect with their circle of friends, conquer sports, grow, learn, and graduate with high grades. The sophomores and upperclassmen may have a generally solid idea of how to accomplish this, but for freshmen, it may be a time of uncertainty, confusion, adjustment, and struggling with immaturity. It may seem intimidating, however, it is a simple playing field to navigate as long as the freshman has an open mind and patience.
High school is a fast-paced environment. You are rarely in the same classroom more than once a day, homework is usually due the following day after it was assigned, and so much more. The first general expectation that comes with the high school environment is the skill of time management. The ability to have an on-the-go and proactive attitude is a life skill that all teachers appreciate and it will make the first year of high school easier.
In this environment, everyone is treated as adults. If grades are failing the teachers will not chase you down to force you to put time and effort into your classes. Just like in the real world, if you don’t put effort and hard work into all you do you will not go far. As grades start to fail, your classroom and sports success will likewise fail. Friendships may also suffer because of the inability to spend time with them because the responsibility of turning in assignments and raising grades take priority. My advice for you is to own up to the responsibility. Show respect to your teachers and mentors and they will respect you. This should make learning and being in class more enjoyable, even for those who may dislike school with a strong passion.
Lastly, I encourage you to have an open mind and a guarded heart. High school is a small peek into the real world. There are a lot of exciting new opportunities that will be opened up to you. However, there is so much more that can ruin reputations and so much more. Jump on those opportunities to grow and learn what skills you have and what you love. Tread lightly, though. Spending time with other students that act like they love and respect you as a good friend, but they may also be involved in a variety of negative activities that can harm GPA, friendships, and trust. I encourage you to avoid those situations overall.
These four years are meant to be some of the best years of a person's life. It should be full of adventure and enjoyment. This is not possible without a foundational moral check. Don’t be intimidated; we all look out for each other, just have an appropriate attitude and any situation that comes your way can be tackled. The 2023-2024 school year is going to be a bright year, grab this school year by the horns, opportunities are going to continuously be on the rise, making everything so much more exciting.
