4-H Livestock Sale Was Very Successful

MT 43 News Staff

The heart of generosity was alive and well at the 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA ) Livestock Auction on Saturday, August 5 when more than fifty buyers signed up to bid on the members’ animals. Many farm kids showed up to three different animals each, totaling just under 100 entries. Some Lambs, goats and pigs went for as high as $20 a pound. Total sales amounted to $279,572.

County Extension Agent Allison Kosto, in her handout to buyers, explained it this way: “Through livestock projects, youth learn the responsibility of selecting and caring for a quality market animal and enter into a real-world marketing situation through the livestock sale. They also learn many life skills such as record keeping, critical thinking, sportsmanship, goal setting and decision making which they will continue to use through their lives.”

Jason Noyes, chairman of the 4-H Livestock Committee and his vice chair John Ferrat raced from the livestock building to the new Pavilion to set up pens, then take them down when the show was over. Noyes coordinated lining up animals to keep the auction going. Auctioneer Steven Goedert, general manager of Headwater Livestock Auction at Three Forks, plied his trade to encourage the crowd to keep bidding. The list of workers who make the show happen is legendary.

John and Missy Rauser put on their usual excellent barbequed beef dinner complete with baked beans coleslaw, watermelon and cookies. The dinner is offered at no charge to the bidders of the evening. Rausers, who farm west of Toston and run a catering business, have been preparing the free dinner for several years now.

Noyes began the auction by thanking the donors and Diamond Construction who built the livestock Pavilion for their contributions to making the facility happen. The open-air building just south of the 4-H Livestock Building comfortably accommodated both the livestock pens and participants’ bleachers. He commended Broadwater County Commissioners, Broadwater County Trust Board members, and Jim and Amber Burgess for their generous help. Many small businesses and individuals in the county donated to the pavilion, including many 4-H livestock members who gave back some of their earnings from selling their animals.

Winners of the various championship animals, agility and round-robin events will be listed in next week’s paper.
