Winston Resident Wins Big at the Broadwater County Fair
MT 43 News Staff
Audrey Martin lives in Winston and writes children’s books in her spare time. That is when she is not raising a family, running a consulting business, raising farm animals and making jewelry.
Audrey won best of show in the Photography and Literature division for her book, “Storm,” about teaching kids about disaster preparedness, one of her main passions in life. The book is part of a series called” Preparedness Pets”. She illustrated the books herself via computer. However, she would like to find a professional artist for the remainder of the series. She entered the Home Crafts Division of the Fair with a “Tree of Life” wire wrap necklace for which she won a first-place ribbon also.
Her passion for disaster preparedness comes from her 16 years as a wildland firefighter. A native of Arlee in the Mission Valley, she saw fire up close and personal, so takes to heart the importance of teaching people to be prepared for emergencies such as fire. Agate Consulting, Inc. is her disaster and emergency consulting business in which she works with commercial, private and government sectors on how best to prepare for fire and emergency.
While her husband is away following his trucking business and her daughter at the University of Montana, she and her son Colt, age 16, raise and care for Nubian goats and longhorn cattle. It was through the long-horn cattle she began trading animals with a person who raised buffalo. Her creative arts first place in the Home Crafts Division was a female buffalo head painted in blue. “I made one for my son who plays wide receiver to honor the Broadwater Bulldogs. It is blue and white,” she explained.
Audrey is energetic and quick to speak her mind. She graduated from the University of Wyoming, Laramie. She lived in Missoula and was raising two small children while she obtained a master’s degree in public administration. Another of her passions is volunteering in the community. While living in Wyoming and in Missoula she volunteered with emergency services, volunteer fire groups and whatever else needed help in the community. “Without the people who volunteer their time, we have no community: we have no school activities, we have no 4-H, we have no rural fire department. Volunteers make it happen,” she said.
