ACTORS MEASURE UP IN SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARKS PERFORMANCE

Shakespearian actors did a fine job balancing the point of Measure For Measure the play with a delicate handling of age-old human faults – power in the hands of the wrong people quickly goes awry and sex before marriage is a sin.

Set in contemporary dress, the play was carried by the Duke and Claudio, the man caught and condemned to die. They brought to life the intricacies of human frailty – judging others when you might get judged for your own actions.

Actor Liam Johnson, a recent Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate, engaged the audience which was a light touch between acts. As Claudio he came across as a fun-loving, “how did I get here” kind of guy. The heavier parts were carried by Madison Keirnan as Isabella, Claudio’s sister who tries valiantly to save her brother from execution. A flamboyant Riley O’Toole played the heavy part of the Duke. The play with all its twists and turns, was most entertaining but carried a message of reality for current times.

A crowd of about 35 people complete with their snacks and wine, clapped and hooted with encouragement to the actors. The play was made especially enjoyable because Shakespeare in the Parks from Montana State University (MSU) Bozeman, has invested in a good sound system which included earphones for those who might not hear so well.

Townsend Area Chamber of Commerce organized the performance. Sponsors were Broadwater Community Theater, Creative Closet, Elkhorn Vet Clinic and Steve and Linda McCullough.
