Broadwater Rod and Gun Club Derby
Matt Nelson
On Saturday, July 15th the Broadwater Rod and Gun Club hosted the 24th annual Walleye Derby at Canyon Ferry Lake. Douglas Breker, the director of the derby, gave the following statement:
“Broadwater Rod and Gun Club Walleye Derby was started to promote family, friends and youth fishing with the strongest emphasis on youth fishing and their enjoyment of the great Montana outdoors. With the help of many great sponsors and volunteers, Broadwater Rod and Gun Club have been hosting this Walleye Derby for 20-plus years. I have been tournament director since the Walleye Derby inception with lots of help. There is
nothing better than seeing the smiling youth, parents, grandparents,
and friends at the rules meeting and awards coming in with Walleye on their
boats the afternoon of the Derby.”
.
Several volunteers donated their time and efforts to make sure the derby ran smoothly. Each time a boat came in, people held the boat steady while the catch was being measured, weighed, and recorded by others. All who contributed are very much appreciated. Additionally, Townsend Mayor Mike Evans and Broadwater County Commissioner Debi Randolph were out at the lake cheering the contestants on. Debi was especially helpful with this article.
