American Legion Celebrates The Fourth Of July
Brenda Phillips
Tuesday, July 4th the American Legion held a short Independence Day ceremony at the Heritage Park. A few of the fire department guys brought a fire truck for people to look at. The other 1st responders that were invited were on duty.
The leadership of the local American Legion Post read a portion of the Declaration of Independence that pertained to our Freedom and Independence. They also read the Preamble to the Constitution. I was grateful that I took the time to attend this activity because I don't think I have ever read either of these documents written by the founding fathers of our nation. We also said the pledge of allegiance, which I appreciated because I know I don't hear it often enough. A moment of silence was observed for our fallen soldiers and in gratitude for those that serve our country. They also read the American Legion preamble. I found this to be a very interesting statement and commitment. These brothers and sisters in our community commit to continue to honor, and serve our country and community after their official military service has ended.
The audience was invited to relate memories from their favorite 4th of July celebrations. Parades and Community picnics were mentioned. Dave Brown remembered a time that they went to the fairgrounds to watch the fireworks. He and a group of guys he used to sing with choreographed ooo's and aw's ( in harmony) to correspond with the fireworks that were being shot off.
A group of cars, trucks and ATVs decorated in flags and red, white and blue paraded past the park honking.
The gathering then moved to the American Legion Hall for a build-a-burger luncheon. There were lots of flags, red, white & blue and patriotic clothes, to show the spirit of the day! The event was enjoyed by those that attended. Thanks to the American Legion for reminding us of the privilege that we have of living in this free land.
