Glad To Be Back Home In Montana
Author: Diane Freuh

Glad To Be Back Home In Montana Diane Freuh The people in Montana make it great. Writers Group was meeting a few days after I arrived. During the meeting, one person was having trouble hearing. . . so another member offered him the use of one of her hearing aids. He declined, but hey! What an offer! It would have not happened in any of the other places I lived.

About three days later I took my dog, Cody, on a hike by the Big Spring back of Toston. Since the road can be pretty nasty, I parked my car a long way from where I could hike with Cody off-leash. After our hike, we were heading back to the car when a pickup with a -6- plate stopped and the young man inside asked me if this road led to the Toston Dam. His large golden puppy was hanging out the back window whining to be petted.

I petted the dog and said, “No, you should have gone one more road to the south and there is the Toston Dam Road. It will take you right up to the dam. But if you go clear up this hill you can have a really good view of the dam.”

‘Thanks,” he said. “You’re an awfully long way from your car, do you need a ride?”

“No, we wanted to walk. I parked a long way from the spring because I was afraid the road would be muddy and I would get stuck. It would be a long walk home if that happened.”

“No ma’am it wouldn’t because I would have come along to give you a ride.”

With that, he waved and he and his dog started up the hill. I felt the warm happy glow of someone who has been offered help by a stranger.

I’m so glad to be back.
