Local Democratic Convention Dee Gannon MT43 News Correspondent May 31 found the back room of the American Legion abundant with Democrats to hear the Keynote Speaker, long-serving House Representative District 82, Mary Caferro.

Those in attendance (about 25) were treated to a lasagna dinner, including salad and garlic bread; provided by the American Legion Auxiliary.

After dinner, Broadwater Democrats Secretary Kim Rickard Smeltzer introduced Mary Caferro who spoke on prior bills and future bills to be presented to the House of Representatives She also said Governor Greg Gianforte seems to ignore the farmers and ranchers who need to keep the status quo, as far as keeping their land safe and without those covenants that are not helpful to their way of life.

She pointed out the Governor’s plan concerning owners of trailers. If you own a trailer and you live on a rented lot, Governor Gianforte vetoed a bill that would allow you to keep your residence, even if you hadn’t paid your lot rent.

The elections of the local Democratic Committee included Gayle Clifford, Chair; Jeff Ross, Vice Chair; Kim Rickard Smeltzer, Secretary; and Warren Smeltzer, Treasurer.

Ms. Cafarro expressed her need to brainstorm how Democrats can bring the local faction together for the District 77, June 26, meeting. Caferro expressed diversity as one of the major stumbling blocks to face Democrats.

Caferro said later, “I raised my children in poverty; that’s why I fight so hard in the Legislature…so I can make a difference. I’d like to think I am.”
