On Thursday, May 2, 2024 excitement was “running high” as 5th graders gathered in Mrs. Kim Gilligan’s classroom on the second floor of the new Townsend Elementary School for the 20th award ceremony and tree planting event of the Broadwater County 5th Grade Arbor Day Tree Poster Contest. The theme for this year’s poster contest was: “For 20 years, pupils’ posters promote trees”. In 2004 the Townsend Tree Board began sponsoring the poster contest for 5th grade students. The Townsend Tree Board wanted a way to have the kids begin thinking about how trees “worked” for them and why the trees should be appreciated by them. All students, who participated in the Arbor Day Tree Poster Contest, received a gift certificate from the Mint Café for a scoop of Ice cream. Their posters will be displayed for viewing at the Broadwater Community Library, in all likelihood.

The top prizewinning posters were drawn by the following Townsend 5th graders:

3rd Place: Rita Campbell from Mrs. Kim Gilligan’s class; received a $20 check from the City of Townsend. 2nd Place: Myla Graveley from Mr. Tanner Hoff’s class; he received a $30 check from the City of Townsend. 1st Place: Jolie Ferreira from Mrs. Kim Gilligan’s class; she received a $50 check from the City of Townsend. As 1st Place winner Miss Jolie will receive 1 framed poster as a keepsake and a second framed poster will be prominently displayed at the Townsend Elementary School alongside the first-place posters from the past 20 years.

All of the winning posters will be reproduced into a postcard. The three winners will receive copies of the posters and postcards for their own use. Copies of the postcards will be retained by the Tree Board for use in correspondence, thank you notes to the Tree Board benefactors, and for board meeting announcements.

After the announcement of winners and presentation of prizes the students, teachers and guests proceeded outside for a tree-planting event. A new tree was planted near the front of the schoolyard where the old Elementary School stood.
