THIS WEEK'S CATEGORY: Barley and Hops
International Beer Day is celebrated worldwide on the first Friday in August, and you don't even need to wait until 5 p.m.! These five podcasts are giving you permission to kick off the last month of summer with a brew of your choice -- a craft beer, a best-selling favorite, or a home brew out of your neighbor's garage:
"Drink Beer, Think Beer With John Holl" -- For more than two decades, John Holl has been covering the beer industry as a reporter and editor. He hosts three different beer podcasts, including this one, and has penned six books about the golden beverage that's loved by everyone -- from fictional characters like Homer Simpson to former POTUS Barack Obama. Recent episodes of this weekly podcast discuss how lager's making a comeback and how brewers are incorporating tech into their process while still staying hands-on. (AllAboutBeer.com)
"Beer Guys Radio" -- This weekly podcast celebrates all things craft beer, covering the brews, business, art, culture and science that goes into making your fermented favorites! Check out their episode titled "250 Years in American Beer," where they share George Washington's actual home-brew recipe. Be sure to also listen to their annual episode from April, where they discuss the top 50 craft breweries according to the Brewers Association. (BeerGuysRadio.com)
"The Beerists Craft Beer Podcast" -- Looking for something more specific from your beer podcast, like reviews of five different craft beers each week? John Rubio and his co-hosts meet up each episode to personally taste, discuss and rate five beverages that are brewed from all over the world. Deemed "part beer appreciation, part drunken comedy," this podcast is "the only beer podcast that the A.V. Club calls 'consistently illuminating and amusing,'" according to its bio. Be sure to check out their annual "Blind Holiday Spectacular," where they drink four unlabeled beers with "Santa's most devious elf" Andy Richter ("Conan" and "Dancing with the Stars"). Don't Forget These Gems
"Beers & Bible" -- There are several similarly titled podcasts ("From Beer to the Bible," as well as "Bros, Bibles & Beer"), but the only one that can boast the clever tagline "Crushin' Brews and Flippin' Pews" is this one. Pals Anthony Kidd and Michael Richard combine their love of beer with their love of God, taking listeners through a book of the Bible verse by verse and how to apply it to everyday life. "A Woman's Brew" -- Friends Joanne Love and Tori Powell, who are based in the United Kingdom, weave in their American connections with their love of travel to bring you stories from across the industry, as well as across the globe. Their "Bucket List Beer" episodes are arguably their most popular, building on a list that recently peaked with their review of Sam Adams' Utopias -- an "extreme beer" in a unique, collectible bottle with a whopping ABV (alcohol by volume) of 30%!
