Answers
1. Cher, in 1989. The video for the song was recorded on the USS Missouri. The Navy had expected Cher to perform wearing a jumpsuit, as that was what had been presented to them. Instead, she came out in a fishnet outfit.
2. Rufus. They've also been known as Smoke, Ask Rufus and Rufus with Chaka Khan.
3. Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary. He based it on a 1959 poem by a college student, LEOnard Lipton. When the song received royalties, Yarrow made sure Lipton got half of them, which he did until Lipton's death in 2022.
4. Trans World Airlines (TWA), in 1968, with slightly changed lyrics.
5. "A Hazy Shade of Winter," by Simon and Garfunkel, in 1966. In 1987, the Bangles released a cover that was used in the soundtrack of "Less Than Zero."
